ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia’ flagship art museums and is a popular tourist spot for the ultimate art and cultural experience. It is conveniently located 15 minutes away from the Sydney city centre at the Sydney Domain, overlooking the Sydney Harbour. The Gallery was first established in 1871 and recently celebrated their 150th anniversary in 2021. It went under significant refurbishments through the Sydney Modern Project in 2022 and the space ultimately doubled in size to allow for more art to be displayed for people. The gallery features the original historic building, an all new building as well as a public art garden filled with work from Australian and overseas artists for everyone to enjoy. Admission into the gallery is free apart from selected exhibitions such as the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2023.
ABOUT ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
The Art Gallery of New South Wales holds a diverse collection ranging from Australian artworks from the colonial and 19th century, European, Asian and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. They aim to tell stories of human encounters, cultural exchange and offer insights into individuals' creative minds. The most iconic display is Samara Golden’s Guts who uses mirrors to create an illusion of an endless apartment block with a fascinating array of objects. The Archive of Minds by conceptual artist, Kimsooja, is an interactive installation allowing visitors to collect a handful of clay and create a collective piece of artwork. Visitors are encouraged to join the gallery tours for a more engaging and immersive experience. These tours vary from regular free public tours to private sessions for corporate functions or just for a more personal touch.
There are plenty of food options available on site of The Art Gallery of New South Wales located both in the North and South Building. They have partnered up with The Fresh Collective and work with renowned chefs including Matt Moran and Clayton Wells to offer contemporary culinary experiences with a colourful and innovative twist. They also have a Gallery Cafe, Espresso Bar and Kiosk available too as alternative options.
Being one of the most beautiful cultural precincts in Sydney, The Art Gallery of New South Wales offers an iconic venue for hire, available for different functions and events. There are six venue spaces available in the original South Building and five event spaces in the new North Building. The funds collected from venue hire is used to support art in Australia and helps to fund Gallery programs.
